This swinging quartet is a special collaboration between some of the finest jazz players in the Netherlands and Greece today. With a deep knowledge of the jazz tradition, their music is tough, and full of blues and soul. The alto player Tom van der Zaal has grown into a stellar and distinctive performer. His playing is firmly rooted, with a strong personal sound and a fresh improvisational approach. On piano this quartet features the fantastic pianist, Yiannis Papadopoulos. He is one of the most creative piano players around in Athens and a very well known name in the Greek music scene. Drummer Thomas de Visser recently taught jazz drums at the Music Department of the Ionian University and is a regarded bandleader, as well as a highly sought after sideman. He has just finished a short tour through Portugal with the Gidon Nunes Vaz Quintet. Together with Greek bass player Ntinos Manos they form an energetic group, that will be especially put together for this occasion. They all have performed on the most important stages including the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Bimhuis. The quartet stands for a unique performance filled with exciting and swinging arrangements from composers like the great Elmo Hope, Hank Mobley, Roy Hargrove and many others.
Tom van der Zaal was brought up in a musical family and received the first price at the prestigious Prinses Christina Concours on a young age. He recently won the famous Sena Jazz Award, and just finished recording his debut album featuring the great Peter Bernstein on guitar. Tom finished his Master at the Royal Conservatory in the Netherlands where he studied with John Ruocco and Toon Roos. In his last semester, after receiving several scholarships, Tom went to New York to study with greats like Aaron Goldberg and Greg Hutchinson. Over the years Tom shared stages with, Greg Hutchinson, Peter Erskine, Peter Bernstein, Reuben Rogers, Slide Hampton, James Carter, Philip Harper, Peter Beets, John Ruocco to name a few.
Thomas de Visser is a Dutch professional drummer who specializes in jazz whilst also having stage and studio experience in a large variety of music styles. Playing concerts in cities like Berlin, Istanbul, Rio de Janeiro, Brussels, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Porto Alegre, and Antwerp has given him the opportunity to work with great artists, including Joe Cohn, John Ruocco, Simon Rigter, Juraj Stanik, Martin Fondse, Rob van Kreeveld, Jorge Pardo, Ondrej Stveracek, Jos Machtel, Roby Lakatos, Mete Erker, Ricardo Pinheiro, Gidon Nunes Vaz and many more. He has performed on some of the most important jazz stages in Europe, including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Hot Club de Portugal, the Hat Bar, Hot Club Gent and many others. Thomas holds a Master of Music degree from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and recently taught at the Music Department of the Ionian University in Greece.
